Rants

Some random stuff that I might want to post up .

A tiny effort goes a long mile

Nope. I still have not figured out the virtue of doing nothing. How could someone like ‘doing nothing’? But in this case, I think it depends on what you mean by that phrase. But if you think again, there’s no such thing as that actually because you’re constantly doing SOMETHING. How could you possibly be doing nothing?

How people normally define it is times when you daydream or ‘slack’. Think about it. Daydreaming is already doing something. And what they say of  ’slacking’ could mean doing something that’s not important such as leisure activities but isn’t that doing something already? So it’s impossible to do nothing.

Anyways, living in peace ain’t my style. And I don’t mean that I like wars. But it’s just that I have to be constantly doing something. The least I can do is to snuggle up, sip a cup of hot chocolate and have a storybook in hand. That’s probably one of the best things that I wish I could afford to do. Right now, it’s impossible because the guiltiness that I should be revising is just hanging around my head constantly! There’s no way I can read a book in peace.

But reading storybooks are the only thing that makes me dream. I mean genres like supernatural and science fiction. These things do not exist in real life (or they may but we do not know it yet) but they do in books. And often, it gives me space to relax and let go of reality for once. I may be a person who is too realistic but that’s what my thinking is. Observing everything around me has made me realised how this world is. We can’t change others but we can change ourselves.

Life is what we make out of it. It depends on how you look at it. If we can’t make it better, why not change how we look at the world? Then maybe we can in hope find those minute happiness that are hidden away behind a cloud or a grain of sand. To me, it’s important to accept things. But it doesn’t mean that you accept it and yeah, that’s all to it. Nope! You have to digest it, analyze it and get your meaning out of things.

It doesn’t matter if you’re different in anyway because people are never meant to be the same. Isn’t that amazing? How we could be almost genetically the same but our way of thinking and actions differ in almost every way? It’s our differences that makes life interesting. Because we are different, we are able to live lives other people can’t. We are special in our own rights and we will always be because we are who we are and others can never be us. And that’s precisely why others can’t do everything for us because no matter how much they try, we are the ones who decides for ourselves.

Learning to accept fate and giving in to it are two different issues. People who can accept the world for what it is are admirable for it is really difficult. It’s almost impossible to believe that the person at the other side of the globe is starving from hunger and suffering in poverty when we are here enjoying all these luxuries that they can’t afford. Which is on the other hand, tough for them to accept that at the other side of the globe, there are people who can earn enough to make ends meet and still be unsatisfied with what they have. Isn’t it kind of intriguing?

Besides, accepting things for what they are would open our eyes to an entire new world. At that time, you have two routes to either give in or make a difference. Most of us decided to sit on the fence because we want to do something but lack the ability to. But actually in us, we all have the power to do that something. Even if its not for others, we can do it for ourselves. Just a little effort and life may change.

Talking about this leads to another point I want to talk about. It’s time we do something for the environment isn’t it? Its indeed true that one person can’t make a difference but the entire world population can. There’s approximately 6.7 billion people. Imagine if all of us do not waste a piece of paper, we’ll be saving 6.7 billion pieces of paper. That’s totally significant. So people, start to make that little effort now! No matter environmentally or what.

And this links to what I’ve read in the morning. The issue of Times magazine “The Rise of the Ethical Consumer”. Perhaps it’s time to face the truth of what we are actually buying (:

Perfection

It’s hilarious but true. Everyone strives for perfection, whether we admit it or not. We always aim to become a better person in all aspects ranging from academics to morally.

Its obvious that in this society, most of us regard looks as an important area we must strive perfection in. The prevalence of the striving cosmetic surgery industry often make us rethink if this world is advancing in the correct direction. Sadly though, we often do not practice what we preach. When we are young, we are taught to be morally upright and always place others before us.

In this society of ours, it seems that the drive to looking perfect is because of those comments we hear from others every single day. Sometimes we try really hard to ignore them but we know that they do affect us. Unknowingly, we change. When just one person says that your new bottle for instance doesn’t suit you, the next day we’ll be seen without that anymore. And when others ask about it, we’ll give an excuse to covering it up. We pretend that we aren’t affected and say that it’s spoilt or what so ever.

Everyone is affected to a different degree. Some may feel that this is exaggerated but I’ve observed that this isn’t a false accusation. Perhaps some choose to ignore it on the surface but the person just cannot forget the comment that the particular person said. Then we hope others would praise us about it instead. But that, just shows how much we care about what others said and how people view us and regard us in their perspectives.

Many a times, we are too affected by how people view us and in the end lose ourselves while changing. Because we keep thinking about how others would see us, we keep changing to suit their tastes. In the end, we become desperate because no matter how much we change, we can never become perfect. In the sense that we cannot please everyone. Everyone is different, we like somethings and detest others. So it’s impossible to make everyone have a good impression of you.

No matter how hard you try, that is just quite the impossible. And that perhaps is the reason why in this world, no one have achieved that “perfect” level yet. But some argue that if we’re all perfect, wouldn’t that just makes us all the same? The point is nobody have a yardstick to measure perfectness. What does being “perfect” actually mean anyway?

Everyone is bound to have some flaws somehow. But these flaws can be turned into something appealing depending on how you view it. Something that digust one could possibly attract the other. On that thought, I often remind myself to act according to my wishes, do not be easily influenced by others though it’s really difficult. Never get so affected to change and in the end you lose yourself.

There’s not much sense actually. Because when you try to please others too much, you’re the one suffering. Instead just be yourself and for whoever that loves you for who you are, treasure them. For the others, let time change their minds.

The Courage to Speak Up

“There’s only one thing worse than a man who doesn’t have strong likes and dislikes, and that’s a man who has strong likes and dislikes without the courage to voice them” – Tony Randall

It seems like the most common weakness in man(includin me), is the lack of courage to speak up.

Hwee’s Celebrity Charts

I just remembered something that Jolene said during Physics lesson so I thought that I should share. Every physics lecture, we have this lecture attendance sheet where we have to sign our names. And the point was not many was serious enough to actually sign properly so you can see all kinds of signatures over there.

For Jolene’s and mine, it was full of celebrity names. So she started saying the “hwee’s celeberity charts”. When I just entered JC, it was full of JaeJoong and perhaps some random names here and there but they never lasted long. So JaeJoong was the norm. After that, HyunJoong started popping up and the end of last year and this year. Then also came KyuJung and all but yeah, it was still insignificant compared to HyunJoong. Slowly slowly, EunHyuk came into the picture but he didn’t last very long till TOP completely took over his place. So now, he’s all over the place, not only in the physics attendance sheet. LOL.

Seriously, I’ve never thought so much about it and when Jolene told me about it I seriously thought that it was pretty hilarious. She told me that I was unfaithful. I retorted that she was a flirt ! I can’t idolize so many at once and yet she has so many on her list. That scene was pretty funny and she just gave a chuckle.

My predicted death situation

Jolene told me to take this test by Harvard’s Maths Department. Try and you’ll be amazed yourself. The second to cancer was 24% car accident. Gosh. That’s the thing I’m most afraid of and I really don’t want to learn how to drive the car because of this. But well, have to overcome this ><
